I try to take proper care of my skin all year long, but once summer hits and I like less makeup, it’s motivation to be extra diligent. This time of year seems to be when I make health a priority in general, and a nourishing skincare routine is definitely key.
Since I do change certain steps in my skin routine each season, I wanted to share what I focus on once it’s summer. Also, a couple habits that I’ve picked up over the years that really affect me having happy skin. These 5 things, along with a healthy diet (I try to eat a lot of veggies, healthy carbs, lean meat, and fruits) leave me with healthy summer skin. I hope they help you too!
Shop The Look
I know exercise is the answer to mainly everything, but for good reason! For skin specifically, since it increases blood flow, it’s bringing more nutrients and oxygen to the cells on your face and keeping everything nourished. I personally do a mix of yoga, Body by Simone, and similar workout classes, and then I love to run when it’s nice out. All of these do different things for my body, but each makes my skin look healthier in general. Plus, it helps your system detox.
I’ve been using serums ever since an esthetician suggested them, and lately, I’ve been obsessed with Chanel’s Blue Serum. I put this on after I cleanse, and this product specifically works to keep skin looking younger, firmer, and better in general. I really notice a difference when I’ve been consistent about it. The antioxidants in the product work to protect and restore skin, so it’s essential for sun exposure.
Like working out, hydrating solves a lot of problems. I carry a bottle of water with me at all times and try to refill it multiple times a day. I once learned that you’re supposed to drink your body weight divided by two in ounces each day, which has been my goal. This is key for a healthy looking complexion, especially in summer when you don’t want to wear as much makeup! I notice a natural dew and a brighter face when I’m hydrated. I like to add fruit (cucumber, lemon, lime, strawberries) when I’m at home too. Takes like spa water mmmm.
Exfoliate and Moisturize
These are two steps but I always do them together since they are so important. You should be exfoliating a couple times a week, especially as you get older and cells don’t turn over as quickly anymore. I like using exfoliators with natural, gentle beads. Again, this helps me get away with less makeup. Then, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! I’m talking about all of your skin too, not only your face. I’ve been into oils lately – kinda nice and light for summer, and I apply after I get out of the shower or exfoliate. This Ouai one is amazing!
Probably the most crucial part of achieving safe skin. I wasn’t always as smart with protecting my skin growing up in Panama, but I’ve gotten super good about it as an adult. Consistency is a big issue for me, but I’ve loved the Shiseido SPF for a while. I make sure to apply SPF over my face and any body parts seeing the sun. Don’t forget hands while you’re driving – an anti-aging trick I learned a while back.
