4 Style Secrets for Wearing Sequins

Fashion Tips on how to style sequins by Pam Hetlinger | TheGirlFromPanama.com | Sequin Skirt, Black Blouse, Tom Ford Sequin Skirt, Sequin outfit

If you’re familiar with my style at all, you probably already know how I always gravitate towards neutrals and solids. Very rarely do I venture off into color let alone prints. So anything sequin seems way out of my comfort zone! It may come as a surprise that I really cannot say no to a little glitz and glam in my life, especially for something like a fun girls night out. Sequins can definitely be worn, even if your style is more on the classy side like mine, so here are my tips and tricks on how to style sequins. I think we can all use a pointer or two when it comes to wearing these shiny little beads.

1. Opt for Dark Sequins

Sequins can be flashy and in your face, especially when they reflect the rainbow variant, a bright silver, or even gold. If these scare you but you still want to try out the trend, opt for a darker sequin. This way, you still get the glamorous vibe in a low key way. Dark sequins have a way of feeling cool and not too sexy.

2. Pair with Solids

Once you find your key sequin piece, whether that be a dress, top, or skirt, keep the rest of the it simple with black or white accents. This also allows the sequins to be the center of the look. For instance, if you are wearing a sequin body con dress, layer a solid blazer or moto jacket on top to tone the down the shine. In addition, this also helps because you are mixing in textures that break up the sequins.

3. Get Minimal

The trick to pulling off this fabric while looking chic is to keep your accessories to a minimum. Since sequins are so ostentatious, you can keep your jewelry simple. In this look, the only jewelry I wore were some simple studs, one ring, and a tiny bracelet because I did not want the outfit to be too overwhelming. As for my shoes, I went with some clean, strappy black stilettos.

4. Watch the Neck and Hemline

To avoid looking risque and revealing too much, watching those lines are key! For tops and dresses you don’t want the neckline to be too low nor do you want the hemlines too short on skirts. Let’s keep it classy ladies!

5. Mix with Basics

Sparkly pieces are already going to draw a lot of attention so you can wear it more intentionally by pairing it with everyday basics. A sequin blouse looks great with joggers or light blue jeans while a glitzy jacket slightly elevates an easy sweater dress. Those are a few ways I’d make sequin work for the day.
