Nothing spoils the start of an amazing vacation like jetlag. Everyone succumbs to it at some point, but with one of my New Year resolutions more traveling and adventure I’ve been determined to find a way to prevent it. In this post I’m excited to share 3 tricks that have helped me beat jetlag and get the most out of my trips.
Hydrate
I never realized how dehydrating flights can be until I started to travel more frequently. It has been shown that people are the most comfortable in an environment with balanced humidity (around 50%), however the humidity on a plane can to dip as low as 1%! That means increased fatigue, dehydrated skin and dry, tired eyes. An easy way to avoid this is to carry an empty, filtered water bottle with you. Doing this is so convenient because it allows you drink up and refill at any time, even on the plane.
To Sleep, or Not to Sleep?
A great rule of thumb that has really helped me adjust to time differences is to sleep only when I would be sleeping once I’m at my destination. Adjusting to the local time while you’re flying allows your body to naturally adapt to the time difference. I know this can be difficult, but once you get the hang of it you’ll notice a significant change in how you feel.
Preflight Prep
What’s worse than jetlag? Getting sick from your flight. When you travel germs are everywhere, which is why I’ve found that prepping my body pre-flight helps fight post flight illness. A few days prior to my flight I like to load up on Vitamin C and B-12 to boost my immune system and reduce the risk of getting sick from the recycled air and close contact that I have on the plane. Also, hand sanitizer is a necessity for me. It’s so easy to touch your face or rub your eyes when you are traveling, which is one of the easiest ways to get sick. Frequent sanitizing is a must!
I hope my tips help, I’d love to hear what you do to beat jetlag in the comments below! Stay tuned for more details on my latest adventure coming soon…
