Something I’m a big fan of is mixing high and low fashion. Like most people, I don’t always buy designer clothing, and I still love shops like H&M and ASOS for trendier pieces. Sometimes when people find out that I’m wearing a piece from a trendier, more affordable store, they seem in shock. Then they usually ask me a couple tips on making cheaper items look nice. Since everyone wants to look their best, I wanted to cover how to make outfits look expensive, no matter the budget.
Shop the Look
Blazer // Pants // Tank // Mules // Chloé Bag (similar) // Earrings
These are the 4 tips I always keep in mind when making outfits look high-quality:
Consider monochrome
Monochrome dressing in general is chic, so I like to pair cheaper pieces together with one color in mind. Both of my main pieces here, the pants and the blazer, are from H&M, but to me they look like they could be a designer set. I kept everything else minimal and within the same theme of the neutral tones, and that’s one of my go-to styling tips.
Choose wisely
I pay close attention to the material and the detail of pieces, and if something has a ton of beading, seems like it’ll shrink, or is very flimsy, I’ll skip it. Those are pieces I save for and turn to a better quality choice from somewhere else.
Prioritize fit
It can be tempting to purchase something – even if it doesn’t fit your body right – when it’s cheap, but it’s not the best idea. Unless you tailor it! If you really love a piece, take it to your tailor, even if the tailor is more money than the actual item. Wearing something that fits well makes all the difference in the world, so make sure hems hit you well or adjust them if not.
Maintain everything else
When I want to look and feel my best, I make sure to have everything else maintained other than my clothes. Throwing on some lipstick, getting a mani/pedi, wearing jewelry, a clean bag, curling my hair, taking care of my skin, etc., makes the whole look more polished.
Do you have any tips for making things look expensive? Would love to hear!
